You don't achieve anything in your comfort zone

You don’t achieve amazing in your comfort zone

Achievement and pride aren’t found in your comfort zone and sometimes learning a new skill, admitting you could do things better or even sitting an exam for the first time in years can all be terrifying prospects.

I recently experienced this fear when I was asked if I would like to participate in Training Bytesize’s team building day. As a fairly new member of the team I tried to be open minded even though the thought of a day at Zip World filled me with dread!

Our first challenge of the day was a toboggan coaster through the forest, one kilometre of sharp twists and turns. Now something you need to know is I’ve never been on a roller coaster; I’ve never been to Alton Towers, Blackpool, the local fair, nothing. But, positive thoughts.

As my car climbed the hill, I felt very alone. I had no one to turn to, and so began my first pep-talk of the day. After the first ride I got the speed bug, and by the 3rd run I was squealing with excitement, to say I was surprised is an understatement!

Next up was the Skyride. 0-60 in two seconds. 80ft in the air. Great.

After recovering from the shock of the Skyride we paused for lunch, then it was onto the Zip Safari; a challenge of 22 zip lines and 10 obstacles, all balancing 18meters in the air. Hovering at the back of the group this time, my anxiety began to pick up a gear or two and I was feeling sick. After getting kitted-up we made our way over to the practice run, but all I could focus on were the platforms balancing high above me. I knew I couldn’t do it. This is where the 2nd pep talk commenced!

As I flew down the final practice zip line I was filled with relief, hello ground! But it was bittersweet; most of the team were in front of me and they had already started the no-turning-back-one-hour-course. I spoke to the instructor who told me I was doing great and should go for it, then I realised – it wasn’t the course I was afraid of; it was the unknown.

I was scared, but I was doing it, and I was so proud. The pep-talks continued, and my feelings of pride and strength grew as I realised everything I was achieving.

It’s now the day after and I feel like I could conquer the world. Every single one of us took on that course alone, facing our own fears and anxieties while shouting words of encouragement through the trees. A small round of applause welcomed each one of us back and as we unclipped our harness there were hugs, the odd swear word coupled with an overwhelming sense of achievement. Together we had done it.

I feel like I have been on an incredible journey with a roller-coaster of emotions, and it got me thinking about how similar this is to someone preparing for an exam or learning a new skill.

It is proven that by throwing yourself out of your comfort zone and pushing yourself to the limit, the sense of achievement you get makes it all worthwhile.

Over the past 24 hours I have discovered a lot about myself and I am thrilled to be part of such an honest and supportive team. Without them I couldn’t have achieved so much in such a short amount of time.
