What does the course cover?

Course contents

Module 1 – Introduction

In the first module, you will be introduced to the documents required throughout the course, the format of the course and the format and question styles of the MSP® Practitioner exam.

Module 2 – Principles, Strategies, Plans and PDCA

The second session reviews the seven principles that underpin MSP®, including the programme strategy, the programme plans and the Plan-Do-Check-Act (PDCA) cycle.

The seven MSP® principles covered are:

  • Lead with purpose
  • Collaborate across boundaries
  • Deal with ambiguity
  • Align with priorities
  • Deploy diverse skills
  • Realise measurable benefits
  • Bring pace and value.

The MSP® principles are universal, meaning they apply to every programme. They are also self-validating – demonstrated by practical use – and empowering, meaning they enable practitioners to reinforce the most critical factors for programme success.

Module 3 – Introduction to Themes and the Organisation Theme

This module will review the MSP® themes and look in more detail at the organisation theme. You will look at the key documents and how they support the organisation theme, the focus of the key roles, the organisation structure and the individual roles.

Module 4 – The Design Theme

In this module, you will look at the design theme. During the session you will build on the Foundation knowledge and look in more detail at:

  • The focus of the roles
  • Benefits and the types of benefits
  • Benefits profiles and benefits maps
  • Risk and risk prioritisation
  • The target operating model
  • The current and future state, and gap analysis.
Module 5 – The Justification Theme

In this module, you will review the justification theme. Here, you will look at how the key documents support the justification theme and go on to review the focus of the roles, investment appraisals, financial contingency, and business case validation.

Module 6 – The Structure Theme

Module six covers the structure theme. You will first review the key documents that support the structure theme and then move on to look at:

  • The focus of the roles
  • Establishing the appropriate pace
  • Delivery planning
  • Multimodal delivery
  • Dependencies
  • Benefits realisation planning
  • Resourcing approaches.
Module 7 – The Knowledge Theme

In this module you will cover the knowledge theme, including the knowledge and learning approach, and the information approach in the programme strategy.

You will then move on to review: the focus of the roles, key concepts, and information management.

Module 8 – The Assurance Theme

Module eight looks at the assurance theme. You will be familiarised with the key supporting documents for this theme, such as:

  • The assurance approach in the programme strategy
  • The assurance plan
  • The focus of the roles
  • The three lines of defence
  • Assurance planning
  • Success factors
  • Assurance steps
Module 9 – The Decisions Theme

This module will review the knowledge theme. Firstly, you will look at the key documents that support this theme, which are:

  • The decision-making approach
  • The issue resolution approach
  • The risk response approach in the programme strategy
  • The decisions register
  • The issue register.

For the next step you will then go on to look at the focus of the roles, decision points, issue resolution, risk management and responses, and data gathering and reporting.

Module 10 – The Processes

In the final session you will review the seven processes defined in MSP®, which are:

  • Identify the programme
  • Design the outcomes
  • Plan progressive delivery
  • Deliver the capabilities
  • Embed the outcomes
  • Evaluate new information
  • Close the programme

The module ends with a process Sudoku, exercises and a summary.

Online MSP® Practitioner course

The MSP® Practitioner course builds on the foundational knowledge acquired in the MSP® Foundation course, providing in-depth training on applying the MSP® framework to real-world scenarios in your workplace.

Equipping participants with advanced skills in governance, risk management, benefits realisation, and stakeholder engagement, MSP® Practitioner ensures you can manage complex programmes effectively and align them with organisational strategic objectives.

Achieving the certification not only enhances your professional credentials but also significantly contributes to the success and efficiency of the programmes that are being managed, ultimately driving organisational growth and transformation.

The online course should take between 10 and 15 hours complete, which includes notetaking, exercises and exam practice. It is assessed through an objective testing examination that includes 70 questions, which you will need to complete within 2 hours 30 minutes.

Your training will be delivered at our state-of-the-art offices, where there is free parking and Wi-Fi to help make your learning journey as smooth as possible.

Virtual MSP® Practitioner course

If you’re unable to attend the course in person in Nantwich, you have the option to attend the same course virtually from the comfort of your own home or office.

A dedicated high-performance, ceiling-mounted camera tracks the trainer and streams the course throughout the day. The Training ByteSize trainer will use a radio microphone to ensure everyone – in-person or virtual – can hear their insights.

With a Zoom account, an internet connection, webcam, and microphone, you’ll be able to ask questions and communicate with the trainer and attendees throughout the day.

Before the course

When you have booked your place on the MSP® course, you will receive a confirmation email and then a booking form for you to sign. You will have the opportunity to inform us of any dietary requirements or any additional needs or reasonable adjustments for any exams.

A thorough, clear and professional course support pack with stationary including pre-course materials and further instructions for the course, will be sent three to four weeks before the course commences.

During the course

Each day, the course will start at 9:00 in the morning. Our friendly, expert trainer will guide you through the course syllabus ensuring that you understand all the information, with questions and activities throughout the course to reinforce the learning.

Exams can be taken on the last day of the course, or they can be deferred and taken online later. However, we encourage you to take the exam as soon as possible whilst the information is still fresh from your course.

Lunch is ordered from a local company who provide a selection of sandwiches, fruit, scones and cakes. Crisps, breakfast bars, chocolate bars, tea, coffee, hot chocolate, and water are available throughout the day.

Travel, parking and directions

There is free parking at the Training ByteSize offices where the training centre is located. If you are staying at The Cheshire Cat Hotel, there is also free parking for guests.

If you are travelling by train, you can arrive at either Crewe or Nantwich train station.

Crewe train station: It’s around seven miles from Crewe train station to Nantwich, so we usually recommend getting a taxi to the training centre, which should take around 15 minutes.

Nantwich train station: There are trains from Crewe to Nantwich every hour and Nantwich train station is located just five minutes away from the town centre on foot. It’s a 25-minute walk to the Training ByteSize training centre, or just five minutes in a taxi.

Residential courses in Nantwich

To take some of the travel stress away, we offer residential MSP® Practitioner courses where you will stay at a local hotel – The Cheshire Cat – for the duration of the course. With our residential courses, accommodation is provided in the cost of the course.

There is a bar and restaurant at the hotel, but if you fancy something different, there are a variety of pubs and restaurants in the town centre which are nearby.

What is MSP® Practitioner?

The MSP® Practitioner certification is the next level after the MSP® Foundation certification. It is designed for professionals who want to demonstrate their ability to apply the framework to real-world program management scenarios.

Does MSP® Practitioner expire?

All PeopleCert Business and IT certifications must be renewed within three years of their original certification date.

There are two ways in which you can renew your certification:

Upgrade to PeopleCert’s Plus Plan membership to gain access to the Continuous Professional Development (CPD) program, which allows you to maintain your certifications by logging CPD points for daily professional activities.

Keep your certifications current by attending another course and passing an exam within the same Product Suite before your certification’s renewal date.

What level qualification is MSP® Practitioner?

The MSP® Practitioner qualification is considered an intermediate-level certification within the framework.
